"I just don't understand them! Everyday I'm telling the boys, 'Turn off the a/c when you leave the room' They just don't listen! Last month our bill was almost $300!" She threw her hands up in complete exasperation.

Unfortunately, this is one of the most common complaints. Kids want to do the right thing, but without an understanding of why this so important, it will not be the first thing that pops in their minds.

I live in Thailand were air conditioners are as necessary as bottled water. Here we have 360 days of hot, sticky weather and we are truly grateful to the Cooling Gods.

However, as the days get hotter, more people are demanding comfort. The CFCs from air conditioners are pollutants that destroy the ozone molecules. This thins the ozone layer allowing more ultraviolet (UV) rays to enter our atmosphere. This is what causes global warming. This extra heat creates more demand for a/c!

Now, I'm not suggesting throwing out your air conditioners or making them illegal and banning them from Earth forever…well…No, but there are a few things you and your family can do to help save the world and teach kids how to save money on electric.

o Compliment your cooling needs with ceiling fans and/or floor fans. This will distribute and help circulate the cooler air more efficiently.

o Clean the filters and coils once a month. If air is blocked from dust that gets collected, the unit can't breathe. This makes it work harder. Here's a helpful reminder: whenever the electric bill comes make that the day to clean or change your filters and spray the coils.

o The best air conditioners are those that fit your room. A unit that's too small for the area will work too hard, never feel cool enough, and will skyrocket your electric bill!

o Consider Energy-Star rated units. A 5-rating is the most energy-efficient.

o So, how to get the kids to help? Get them involved. Have them check out global warming and its effects to their planet. Make it a family project and support their ideas. Let them know they can be action heroes whenever they take small steps to create a better world.


I'm very lucky to teach high school science in Bangkok. I assigned a science project for their final grade. The students had to research and create Power Point presentations about global warming.

One day, while working in my office, two of my students came in to chat. One student reminded me that if I keep the curtains closed it will keep the sun out and then I wouldn't need to use so much air conditioning. They quickly closed the curtains, changed the a/c temperature and bowed with respect as they left. All I could do is smile.

The correct name of the beloved patio chair upon which we lounge is chaise longue ('shAz-'lo[ng]), which translates literally from French as “long chair” – and you must admit, that’s a good name for it!Perhaps the fact that it is usually called a lounge, and commonly pronounced as “chase,” is indicative of our pursuit of leisure. In any case, the chaise longue originated in 16th century France, as an elongated chair with four legs, and a slanted back for reclining. Although earlier versions of it, upon which royals, such as Cleopatra, relaxed, are known to have existed in ancient Greece and Egypt, the chaise longue differed, in that it was designed so that people could lie on their backs, rather than on their sides.In the beginning, the chaise longue was often made out of curved wood and woven caning, or rattan. There is very little that brings out a more peaceful feeling in a person’s heart than the beauty of the country. Whether it is sitting on the front porch with a glass of lemonade to watch the sunset or walking through a field of wildflowers that grew simply by the whim of nature, there is a beauty that can affect anyone. Country living is something that many people wish for. The problem, of course, is that not everyone has the opportunity to achieve that dream. Some people simply do not have the resources to make a move out to a rural area. Others work in fields that are incompatible with the rural lifestyle, or require living in a heavily populated area. Still others really do enjoy life in the city, but just want a little bit of time off now and again from the rush of the city. Well, for all these people, the good new is that you can infuse a little bit of country living into your every day life.

To many people that statement may seem at first to be a bit of a stretch. That is, most certainly, understandable. After all, one might say, country living, by its very definition, requires actually living in the country. In the strictest sense of the term, this is true. However, if you go a little deeper and really examine the rural lifestyle, you will find that there is far more to it than just where geographically you live. That knowledge is what it takes to allow you to add a touch of the country to your city life.

There are two basic principles that really embody the spirit of country living. All of these principles work together to bring about the sense of peace that so many people look for when they turn to the country. The first of these principles is peace through simplicity. Many societies around the world have discovered that simple is often better, and that complication usually leads to confusion. Your life can be made more peaceful by eliminating unnecessary distractions and complications. This can be as easy as simply clearing a few extra items off your schedule and taking more time to relax regularly.

The second principle of country living is peace through togetherness. Often, this works well with the first principle, as a simple life can give you more time to spend together. You will find that if you spend time with those you care about, such as family and friends, your life will almost certainly be better for it. People are not meant to function without each other. No man is an island, as the old saying goes, and this means that, even if you may not always notice it, your mind is naturally wired to be social. This, too, is an easy principle to apply. Regularly set aside time to be with your family and friends, such as eating dinner together, particularly if you have a family of your own. This will help to pass on the principles of country living to your children as well.

Log cabins have been introduced in North America in the early 1700s. In America log cabin designs had been brought allong by the Homestead Act enforced in 1862. With the advent of internet, it has become very easy for us to gain information about various topics with a single click, where it took hours of library research a couple years back. On of the most widespread plumbing issue is that of a leaking spigot. This article discusses some easy to follow tips to solve this problem.

First of all, shut off the water supply so that you won't get soaked when you open the joints. Try to get an illustrated diagram of the tap and look at it carefully to under the system. A good number of faucet manufacturers provide illustrative diagrams online or may send upon email contact with them. In case you don't have access to any such diagram, then disassemble the tap and keep all parts separate in their respective order of disassembly. This will help you install the tap quickly later. Else, you may later get confused about which part should come first.

The information presented here will focus on fixing compression faucets. There are typically two handles in these faucets. First, reflect on whether the leak is really in the handle. To start, it is important stop up the sink so that you won't lose any small pieces down the drain. Then, you will have to remove the cap of the handle. Afterward, open up the screw inside and take off the handle. You can insert a screwdriver beneath the handle and push it upwards a bit to make this removal easier. However, make sure that you wrap some tape around the screwdriver to avoid any scratches around the base of the handle. In most cases, a leak inside the handle is caused due to loosening of the packing nut inside. If that's the case, then tighten this nut using a wrench. Now turn on the water supply and see if the leakage has stopped or not. If you still find water leaking from the handle, the problem is probably with the O-ring. Open the packing nut and replace the old O-ring with a new one. This would ultimately stop the leakage if it's originating from the handle.

Now if the leakage is in the spout, you will need to disassemble that. Take off the screw from the stem. You will find a washer there. Most probably, this washer might have torn out with time so replacing it with a new one may solve the problem. However, while you work at this, it'd also be great to use a scratchy surface into the valve to clean it from within. You can also insert your finger there to see if the surface is rough anywhere, which usually indicates some damage.

Though it is not that difficult to repair a leaking tap, anyone doing it for the first time can mess up with the job. So prior to starting this task, keep some plumber's contact info with you, so you can call him in case of an emergency.

Try to clean the brass hardware on the window with the help of a soft cotton cloth. Clean the window track regularly otherwise dust will build up and it may become harder to open them. The screens should also be cleaned regularly to avoid bugs to enter. To clean the screen soak them in a tub full of water and then clean it with a garden hose. This may increase the screen life.

Condensation means the fog that can be seen on the glass of the windows. It happens because of high humidity in the house. It generally appears as moisture on the glass of the window. If moisture is seen on the windows it is because of high humidity at home. When the interior temperature of the house is 70 degrees the inside humidity should be according to the outside temperature. When the outside temperature is -20 degrees and below the inside humidity can be 15 percent. When the outside temperature is 10 F to 0 F the inside humidity can be 30 percent. Considering the outside temperature the inside humidity has to be adjusted. Humidity can be reduced by opening the curtains everyday so that the house air can enter the window. Let air circulate in the bathroom, kitchen everyday so that there could be less humidity. Try to keep the humidity level of the house under control with the help of a humidifier. Keep in mind that items such as clothes exhaust fans, gas heaters are vented properly.
