Log Homes Restoration In Alabama

Living in log homes can be very comfortable and classy. In Alabama, you will see quite a number of log homes, either antique or modern. The Alabama weather condition is more biased to sunny and warm weather, making them an ideal location for log homes. However, even classy and well-built homes can be ruined and may need restoration. Unlike concrete types, log homes require a lot of maintenance otherwise log rotting, staining and chipping can occur. This is why alongside the numerous log homes in Alabama, there are also a number of log home builder and restoration companies. If you are planning to buy or already own a log home in Alabama, always have your house checked for possible log defects and need of any restoration work.

In Alabama, no one method can be used in log home restoration. The restoration method will depend on the amount of damage and the cause of the damage. Too much sun can have ill effects on log especially if they weren't sun protected, while rain can cause different degrees of log rotting, chipping and staining.

Dealing with Water Damage

The most common log home restoration projects in Alabama are water related such as mold and mildew removal, re-staining and log replacement. Minor mold and mildew growth and the process of removing them can result to wood staining and break up of wood coatings. But before logs can be re-stained, they have to be refinished first. Most contractors in Alabama use Cob Blasting, the best refinishing method so far. It is also environmentally friendly since cobs are biodegradable and non-toxic.

On the other hand, when mold and mildew or rain water has already caused the log to rot beyond repair, the restoration will include log replacement, wood treatment, staining and chinking.

New and Improved Chinking

Another common log home restoration project in Alabama is installing chinking - the sealant between log spaces. Chinking is very important since it keeps air and moisture out, acting as a weather seal. This type of restoration work is most common in older log homes when chinking may have chipped off or may need to be replaced with a modern type of chinking. If you happen to buy an old log home, you won't be surprised to find improvised chinking in between the logs which will need to be totally replaced.

Before chinking can be placed, contractors first install backer rods in between logs for both interior and exterior sides of the wall. The rod is usually shaped like a trapezoid, wider on the other side so it holds itself in between the logs without adhesive. After the backer rods are in place, chinking is placed over it using a piping bag. Current chinking materials are better than the old mortar types found in old log homes. They naturally contract and expand along with wood, and are more resistant to mold and mildew.

If the mortar type of chinking still exists, contractors sometimes do not remove them. The new types of mortars are latex based and have a very good bonding feature.
